History Behind The Dagadusheth Halwai Ganapati Temple
In Pune, Shrimant Dagadusheth Halwai and his spouse, Laxmibai, were traders and confectioners. His first halwai business, “Dagdusheth Halwai Sweets,” is still open in Pune, next to Datta Mandir. He eventually became a wealthy businessman and a successful sweet salesman. They lost their only son to a plague outbreak in the late 1800s. A kind-hearted guru came to them and suggested that they construct a Ganesha temple in Pune.
Dagdusheth later adopted his nephew Govindsheth (born 1865), who was nine years old when they passed away because they had no heir. In 1891, Govindsheth was born in Pune. The original Ganesh idol is still in Akra Maruti Chowk, but he replaced it with a new one. He is a generous and caring man who created another Ganesh idol in the wrestlers’ training center called Jagoba Dada Talim. Dagdusheth, a former wrestling trainer, was the owner of this talim. Govind Halwai Chowk is named after him and is one of Pune’s chowks. Govindsheth oversaw all of the events, including Datta Jayanti, Ganesh Utsav, and other celebrations, with his mother. Today, the house where they lived is called Laxmibai Dagdusheth Halwai Sansthan Datta Mandir Trust. Pune’s Laxmi Road has Laxmibai Dagdusheth Halwai’s name. In 1943, Govindsheth passed away.
